About Us

This privacy policy applies to the Hero Elementary app and website (owned and operated by PBS Twin Cities Public Television (TPT) and the TPT LRNG Admin Portal for educators. For information about the collection and use practices for our general audience services please visit: https://www.tpt.org/privacy-policy/.

We take privacy very seriously at TPT and this policy is designed to tell you what information we collect and how we use it.

The Hero Elementary app and website (Hero Elementary) are aimed at children ages 5-8. The LRNG Admin portal is intended to be used by educators to support the child-directed learning activities on the website.

Changes to this policy

We may make changes to the policy from time to time so please be sure to check regularly. If we make a material change to this policy and we have your contact details, we will make reasonable efforts to contact you before we make the change.

Information we collect from children

A teacher creates the accounts for their students by providing a first name, first initial of last name and an optional parent email. We collect a first name from a child when they initially access their account. We also ask the child to use their device camera to scan a QR code to ensure they access their unique account that has been set up by an educator. With an account, the child is able to complete online activities.

If TPT has collected a parent email address, we will use this to send parent's notice of their child's participation in the program. Parents can opt in to receive email updates about their child's progress. If you have any questions about the information collected, or if you would like to request that your child's information and account be deleted, please email us at [email protected].

Information educators provide us on our LRNG Platform

Educators provide their first name, last name, and email address to create an educator administrator account. Educators input student first name, student first initial of last name, and optional parent email to create student accounts.

Other information we collect

Log information is collected by Unity for the family science app, and by TPT using a custom telemetry system. Both systems collect: TPT also records action taken by students if they are enrolled in research activities, for example opening an ebook or article, time spent on an ebook or article, opening a video, time spent on a video, playing a game, actions taken in the game (win, loss, button clicks, etc).

This information is mapped to a unique identifier that represents a user, but is not directly linked to any user. All students taking part in research activities have the permission of their parents and PBS Twin Cities has a signed parent consent form on record for each student.
